The dark side of apprenticeship: workplace violence and career barriers

Article
Purpose – This study estimates the likelihood of workplace violence for apprentices. Using the approach of intersectionality theory, it studies how this probability varies according to several factors that increase their vulnerability (gender and education) or reduce it (integration and support). Design/methodology/approach – Using data from the European Working Conditions Survey, the analysis distinguishes between apprentices and employees to highlight the specific vulnerabilities and risk of workplace violence of the former. Findings – The results indicate that apprentices experience more workplace violence and that this workplace violence affects their career development expectations. Specifically, trainees who have experienced workplace violence perceive lower job recognition, believe that the risk of job loss is higher and see their chances of career advancement as worse compared to their peers. Originality/value – The study highlights the need for targeted human resource policies that address these disparities and support trainees at a critical stage in their career development. Implications for future research and practice suggest integrating organizational support mechanisms, such as mentoring and comprehensive training, as well as reviewing the ambiguous legal employment framework for apprentices. © 2025 Emerald Publishing Limited

Bridging technology and cognition: investigating augmented reality acceptance and thinking skill development using SEM-IPMA analysis; Conectando la tecnología y la cognición: investigación sobre la aceptación de la realidad aumentada y el desarrollo de habilidades de pensamiento mediante análisis SEM-IPMA

Article Open Access
Introduction: prior research has predominantly focused on dissecting the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to elucidate users’ behavioral intentions toward adopting technology. Building upon this foundational scholarship, the present study advances the discourse by examining the cognitive ramifications associated with technology adoption. In particular, this investigation seeks to elucidate the interplay between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and the actual utilization of augmented reality (AR) technologies, as they pertain to the cultivation of computational thinking and critical thinking competencies. Method: this research adopts a quantitative approach, with an associative design. A sample of 141 vocational high school students from West Sumatera, Indonesia. The collected data were examined through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Importance-Performance Map Analysis (IPMA). Results: statistical analyses indicated that both perceived ease of use and actual AR utilization significantly enhanced students’ computational and critical thinking skills. While perceived usefulness significantly influenced critical thinking, its effect on computational thinking was not statistically meaningful. IPMA results further highlighted that AR’s ease of use performs strongly, whereas perceived usefulness remains an area for improvement. Conclusions: the theoretical extension of the TAM into the domain of cognitive outcomes, moving beyond its traditional behavioral scope. They also establish a compelling platform for future scholarly inquiry and the formulation of strategic, evidence-based approaches to optimizing AR integration particularly in fostering higher-order thinking. © 2025; Los autores.

Article Open Access
Introduction: entrepreneurship education is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in shaping students’ intentions to pursue digital entrepreneurial careers. However, the mechanism through which this education influences students’ digital entrepreneurial intention, particularly through entrepreneurial attitude, remains underexplored in the context of vocational education in Indonesia. Method: this study employed a quantitative approach using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to examine the impact of entrepreneurship education on students’ digital entrepreneurial intention, mediated by entrepreneurial attitude. Data were collected through an online survey from 350 students at vocational schools in Indonesia. Measurement and structural models were evaluated to test reliability, validity, and hypothesized relationships. Results: the analysis confirmed that entrepreneurship education has a significant and positive effect on both entrepreneurial attitude and digital entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, entrepreneurial attitude was found to play a substantial mediating role in the relationship between entrepreneurship education and digital entrepreneurial intention. The model demonstrated strong predictive relevance, with R² values of 0,572 and 0,789 for entrepreneurial attitude and digital entrepreneurial intention, respectively. Social class and the mobilisation of capital in physical education-related undergraduate programmes

Article
Expanding Higher Education has increased the focus of undergraduate degrees towards preparing graduates for employment. Much research acknowledges classed inequalities in employability-related learning, yet studies tend to explore these in graduate employability rather than via students’ experiences of mobilising professional knowledge within their degree. Here, we use a Bourdieusian framework to explore how class impacts students’ cultivation and mobilising of professional knowledge. Drawing on interviews from a 2-year study with 17 English undergraduate Physical Education students, the relationship between class and professional knowledge is explored in four ways: (1) connecting experience to academic content, (2) developing relationships with staff, (3) accessing complimentary employment and voluntary opportunities, and (4) utilising university societies to ‘play the game’. We suggest these impact on a student’s capacity to navigate employability-related opportunities at university and influence value judgements made by staff. Consequently, we call for a greater embedding of professional knowledge for all students. © 2025 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The impact of employee delayed retirement on university performance towards job crafting and management policy in China educational institutions

Article
The objectives of this study investigate how delayed retirement influences university management policy and performance towards job crafting among employees and lecturers at China University. 751 participants were recruited for an online survey study. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the research hypotheses. Delayed retirement has a positive and significant effect on job crafting, allowing employees and lecturers to redefine their roles in the workplace and university management policy. It includes engaging in mentorship, seeking autonomy, and fostering reciprocity. University management policy plays an important role in mediating the relationship between predictor variables (e.g., delayed retirement and job crafting) and university management policy. Delayed retirement significantly impacts employees' job crafting, enabling them to redefine their roles in the workplace. This means that experienced workers actively design positions to fit changing demands and capabilities to advance their careers. Stakeholders such as the government and university leaders need to collaborate to enhance university performance. Achieving the Goals of the human Capital Operational Programme in the Romanian Labour Market—Evidence from a Causal Inference Analysis

Article
The main goal of this study is to infer the causal effects of human capital operational programme (HCOP) interventions on the Romanian labor market to provide information about the efficiency of a European investment instrument. Using survey data collected from participants and nonparticipants in EU-funded active labour market programmes (ALMP) in Romania, we find that such support measures had limited effects on obtaining employment in the 2018–2023 period. The diversity of the results among vulnerable subgroups reiterates the conclusion that the target group is an important aspect that explains the efficiency of ALMP. Our research indicates that participating in ALMPs provided by HCOP has been at least as effective as registering with public employment services and receiving regular employment support in the first 6 months. A sensitivity analysis based on E-values indicates that the estimated effects are relatively robust to potential unmeasured confounding. This research contributes to the consolidation of the scarce literature debating the effects of active labor market programmes in Eastern European countries. Furthermore, our investigation proves the efficiency of a new method of causal inference analysis within this topic, namely, the covariate balancing propensity score. This method minimizes covariate imbalance directly rather than minimizing prediction error. © 2025 The Author(s). Published with license by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
