During the 1970s and 1980s, vocational training for general practice developed from experimental beginnings to become established nationwide. Committees were set up nationally and regionally and methods devised for the approval of training practices. Important publications related to the discipline of general practice and to educational methodology appeared. The problems that remain include the absence of a compulsory assessment prior to entering general practice and the low remuneration for course organizers.

An orthodontic module for the vocational training scheme has been designed specifically with the needs of trainees in mind. It has the two-fold aim of streaming patients in relation to orthodontic requirement and providing a proper understanding of the very specific nature of interceptive measures so often advocated in relation to orthodontics. Due to its relative geographic isolation, the small area of Northern Ireland is an ideal region for a pilot scheme such as this. I am now drawing towards the end of my year in Eastbourne as a vocational trainee on the Brighton Scheme. Eastbourne is a busy seaside resort on the south coast. Rather a lot of 'grannies' reside there; but contrary to popular belief I do not spend all day, every day making and repairing dentures! The work is varied and interesting and I am spending a happy year consolidating my knowledge and becoming more confident at practising dentistry. The need was perceived for some sort of cushioning between under-graduate protection and the harsh realities of a working day in general practice. The support for the scheme from dental students was overwhelming. The worried conversations of some final year students, discussing their futures, should change dramatically. The new graduate can now face the challenges of his first steps in the real world with more confidence and security.
