Adopting Backward Design into a Constructionist Curriculum Design for IoT Skill Development in High Schoolers

Conference paper Open Access
Despite the growing demand for experienced Internet of Things (IoT) professionals across industrial establishments, most secondary education institutions do not offer a curriculum to empower students’ knowledge and skills in IoT. Enrichment programs and vocational workshops can be considered as potential solutions to equip students with necessary IoT-related skills and assist them in planning and making conscious career choices. Through this research, we aim to utilize the principles of Backward Design and constructionism in designing an IoT curriculum for enrichment programs for high school students, while incorporating electro-mechanical concepts from electronics, programming, connectivity, and design. The curriculum was used to teach IoT concepts to 28 high school students during two enrichment programs. It was found that students with hardly any prior knowledge in IoT could acquire the necessary skills to design and prototype IoT applications. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Craft education and training fostering jobs in tourism

Book chapter
This chapter explores the intricate link between crafts and job creation within the creative industries. Using a holistic approach, it combines legislative analysis, educational exploration and insights from crafts chambers to understand how crafts contribute to tourism job growth. The study focuses on Bulgaria, assessing the state of craft education and training for the first time. It reviews the regulatory framework and compares skilled crafts with the list of professions for vocational education and training. Employment outcomes for graduates from vocational schools, specialized secondary schools and higher education are compared with those trained under the Skilled Crafts Act. The research identifies significant gaps in craft education, largely due to undervaluation in policy and the flawed replication of international regulatory models without considering Bulgarian experience. Key findings highlight the potential of improving craft education to significantly boost tourism job growth. © CAB International 2025. All rights reserved.

Effects of Health education Based on the Roy Adaptation Model on the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors and Self-Esteem of Working Adolescents: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Open Access
Background: While adolescents are an at-risk group that is in a process of developmental crisis and requires guidance for adjustment. They may be traumatized by challenging conditions due to the negative experiences they are socially exposed to. Having to work is one of the most important social problems that increases the risk situation of this group. Roy's Adaptation Model is also quite suitable for use in interventions and research addressing developmental groups. It is believed that the adaptation of the individual to a new situation in their life contributes to their capacity to improve their health and increase their quality of life. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effects of a Health education Program based on Roy's Adaptation Model on the healthy lifestyle behaviors and self-esteem levels of working adolescents. Design: This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial. Method: The study was conducted at a vocational training center in Turkey between March 14 and June 13, 2022. Lifelong learning in vocational education: A game-theoretical exploration of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and strategic challenges

Article Open Access
Lifelong learning within vocational education significantly influences innovation and entrepreneurship decisions. This is particularly pivotal in developing countries where bridging the gap between entrepreneurial talent demands and the supply from vocational institutions is vital. This study develops a tailored game-theoretic model to examine the interactions between government, entrepreneurs, and vocational education providers. It delves into how lifelong learning shapes entrepreneurial strategies, emphasising institutional innovations by the government and adaptability in enterprises. The model suggests that governments provide lifelong learning policies and support, entrepreneurs adjust their needs strategies in response to business developments, and vocational education institutions deliver skill enhancement programmes. The methodology encompasses analysing how lifelong learning initiatives impact entrepreneurial decisions, risk-taking behaviour, and innovative potential. The study's findings reveal that lifelong learning lowers entry barriers, augments adaptability, and fosters innovation. However, it may also lead to heightened risk aversion, slower decision-making, and overreliance on external support, potentially hindering bold innovation. To mitigate these challenges, governments should devise lifelong learning support schemes that foster innovation and risk management. This study contributes theoretical insights for possible latecomer advantages in developing countries. © 2025 The Author(s)

Neoliberal Discourse on the Webpages of English-Medium vocational education Schools and Coding Bootcamps in Sweden

Article
vocational education and training (VET) programs in Sweden blend classroom instruction and internships, while coding bootcamps offer accelerated adult education in computer science. These institutions increasingly teach in English, mirroring the shift towards English-medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education. Consequently, most EMI scholarship is focused on higher education. This paper investigates how ten Swedish EMI schools are discursively constructed on their webpages, employing reflective thematic analysis to uncover three primary themes: the schools’ affinity with success, the uniqueness of their students, and the schools’ teaching methods. The analysis reveals the schools’ strong affinities with the neoliberal language and ideology, suggesting an alignment with the discourse of academic capitalism in higher and vocational EMI contexts. This paper discusses the similarities and differences in the dominance of neoliberal language and ideology in both educational settings, highlighting broader implications for critical education. © 2025 Institute for Critical education Studies. Modularization in Dual System and Occupational Self-governance Concerns Employing the Fuzzy Control Algorithm in vocational education Personnel Training

Article Open Access
vocational education enhances traditional education by providing students with the advanced information and skills necessary for career success. Based on the traditional course structure, vocational education places equal emphasis on self-governance and occupational skills. This article proposes a Modularization-based Training Control Optimization (MTCO) approach to leverage the adaptability of vocational education training for market skills. This optimization approach classifies the training and its adaptability for the occupational and self-governance skills of the students. Based on the demand, the modular priority for skill-based training is pursued to provide better training efficiency. As optimization is induced for the personnel training, standard interchangeable modules based on the skills and agenda are optimized for maximum efficiency and the minimum swapping between the training sessions. The optimization uses fuzzy control to consider the current demand for personnel for modularization. This optimization relies on the modularization process’s minimum swapping criterion for maximum training efficiency in consecutive and distinct training sessions. Based on this minimum swapping, the new fuzzy control criteria are designed to prevent modularization failures and time demands. © 2025, Zarka Private University. All rights reserved.

Predicting Early Employability of Vietnamese Graduates: Insights from Data-Driven Analysis Through Machine Learning Methods

Article Open Access
Graduate employability remains a crucial challenge for higher education institutions, especially in developing economies. This study investigates the key academic and vocational factors influencing early employment outcomes among recent graduates at a public university in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region. By leveraging predictive analytics, the research explores how data-driven approaches can enhance career readiness strategies. The analysis employed AI-driven models, particularly classification and regression trees (CARTs), using a dataset of 610 recent graduates from a public university in the Mekong Delta to predict early employability. The input factors included gender, field of study, university entrance scores, and grade point average (GPA) scores for four university years. The output factor was recent graduates’ (un)employment within six months after graduation. Among all input factors, third-year GPA, university entrance scores, and final-year academic performance are the most significant predictors of early employment. Among the tested models, CARTs achieved the highest accuracy (93.6%), offering interpretable decision rules that can inform curriculum design and career support services. This study contributes to the intersection of artificial intelligence and vocational education by providing actionable insights for universities, policymakers, and employers, supporting the alignment of education with labor market demands and improving graduate employability outcomes. © 2025 by the authors.

Work-Based Learning in Migrant education: The Case of Finnish vocational education

Article Open Access
This study examines adult migrant students’ and Finnish vocational teachers’ experiences of migrant students’ learning in workplaces as part of vocational education and training qualifications. Theoretically, this study draws on previous research on students’ work-based learning, including insights from the 3P model (presage–process–product factors), as well as the literature on learning and working in a new linguistic and cultural context. The data were collected through individual interviews (n = 11) and a group interview (n = 6) with migrant students and individual interviews with vocational teachers (n = 13). The analysis provides insights into learner-specific and workplace-specific presage factors of migrant students’ learning at workplaces. We propose that these insights should be recognised when searching for new pedagogical solutions aiming at enhancing understanding of migrants’ learning at workplaces. The findings highlight the need to develop the integration of school-based and work-based learning while recognising (1) the benefits of workplace learning for migrant students’ learning and their journeys toward becoming members of work communities, and (2) stereotypical views that may hinder migrants’ efforts to access the benefits of learning in the workplace. © 2025 by the authors.
