Transformative learning can be used as a strategy for measuring teacher effectiveness in online courses. By measuring the transformations that occur within their courses, instructors can understand more about the activities and experiences that are the most impactful for students. In addition, instructors can create opportunities for transformation by designing learning experiences that encourage students to critically self-reflect. This chapter presents an exploratory study that examined instructor and student perceptions of transformation in an online school library graduate program. The data was used to redesign one unit in a course on reference and information services to create opportunities for students to experience transformation with the content. © 2023 by IGI Global. The digitalization of operations is disrupting frontline technical jobs, entailing new competency needs currently not being met by upper secondary education and corporate training programs. To discuss how technical universities can help bridge the resulting “middle-skills gap” without incurring an unwarranted academization of these professions, a two-cycle participatory action research was conducted within the empirical setting of a leading Italian electric-power distribution company. First, an in-depth case study investigated how the advent of smart grids is transforming the work of frontline operation and maintenance workers. Second, a Challenge-Based-learning intervention was co-designed according to the emerging competency gaps, and tested with two classes involved in the company’s school-based apprenticeship program. The findings contribute to literatures on knowledge creation and transformation by academics, and on developmental universities, respectively: technical universities can design effective challenge-based programs thanks to state-of-the-art laboratories, multidisciplinary research, diverse teaching domains, and a stimulating environment; moreover, they can transfer these innovative research-based teaching methods and restore the socio-economic attractiveness of technical schools and professions, thus playing a developmental role in the middle-skills gap issue. A major policy implication that emerges is the–rather urgent–need to foster initiatives aimed at a deeper integration between upper secondary and higher education systems. © 2021 Society for Research into Higher Education.

This study aims to arouse students' interest in physical education (PE) in response to President Xi Jinping's call to strengthen students' physical quality because cultural courses occupy PE classes. Problem-based learning (PBL) is introduced, and a new teaching method of PE is proposed based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) in deep learning (DL). This method is employed to teach the experimental subjects in solid ball throwing. The students' interest, learning ability, and physical quality in the solid ball are investigated by a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire survey shows that the students' academic performance in solid ball throwing is improved, and their problem-solving ability, group cooperation ability, and theory learning ability are improved. Their time on a 1000-meter long run is shortened, and their body flexibility is improved. Therefore, it is believed that this new teaching method based on DL plays a significant role in improving students' physical quality. © 2022 Honghai Li et al.

In order to be able to make full use of domain knowledge to improve the performance of skill word extraction, this paper proposes a skill word extraction method based on a combination of deep learning and corpus features. Skill word extraction is transformed into a sequence annotation problem, and based on the basic model of sequence annotation, Bi-LSTM-CRF, corpus features are added to the input layer, and the output of the input layer is connected with the Bi-LSTM output as the input of the CRF layer. The experimental results show timely updating of the question bank, paying attention to the quality of vocational skill identification, and strictly managing the issuance of vocational qualification false certificates. © 2022 Yeming Wang and Yong Ran.

This full 'research' paper presents the results of a systematic literature review that investigates the penetration of cooperative learning pedagogy in engineering education. The study considered 176 articles published between 2010 and 2020 from the google scholar database, of which 79 met the inclusion criteria. Despite the deep -rooted cooperative learning theory, results revealed that most records equated Cooperative learning to teamwork, grouping strategies and collaborative learning . The remaining records span several engineering disciplines and focus on developing competencies at the lower levels of Bloom's taxonomy, i.e., acquiring factual and conceptual knowledge among students. The records can be categorized into four broad themes: application of cooperative learning for knowledge acquisition, application of cooperative learning for knowledge application, i.e., problem-solving contexts, comparison of effectiveness between Cooperative learning and other pedagogies, and development of a new framework by integrating cooperative learning principles and structures. This study ends with a set of questions to further the use of cooperative learning for engineering problem-solving. © 2022 IEEE.

By analyzing and reflecting on the characteristics of the network in teaching applications and some problems that arise in the traditional classroom teaching mode and classroom teaching in the network environment, some ideas and measures are proposed on how to strengthen and improve the organization and management of teaching in the network environment, and for the effective integration of teaching elements and resources. This paper proposes a teaching evaluation model based on a weighted plain Bayesian algorithm. According to the degree of influence of different attributes on the evaluation results, a method is proposed to determine the weights of each evaluation attribute using the correlation probabilities of class attributes and set the corresponding weights for each evaluation index. The experiment demonstrates that the accuracy of using the weighted plain Bayesian algorithm to construct the model for classification can reach 75%, and the average accuracy can be improved by about 3% compared with the traditional Bayesian classification algorithm. © 2022 Sha Zhou and BaoXin Long.

The Power of Reflection in Teacher Education and Professional Development: Strategies for In-Depth Teacher Learning
(2022)
Based on years of extensive research on teacher development, this book offers a practical introduction to the concept of teacher reflection, demonstrating how student teachers can engage with reflective learning from their teaching and classroom experiences in a systematic and inspiring way. Providing practical models and guidelines for use in the classroom, renowned teacher educators Fred Korthagen and Ellen Nuijten outline various strategies for promoting reflection and illustrate how a deeper form of reflection - ‘core reflection’ - enhances awareness of professional identity and supports the dismantling of inner obstacles, therefore enhancing social justice and empowering diverse student populations. The authors demonstrate how a trajectory for learning can be designed to develop key competencies, as well as the role played by university-and school-based teacher educators in supporting teachers’ self-directed reflection. Featuring a variety of tools that support professional growth, this unique text demystifies the area of teacher reflection, helping to provide concrete and inspiring examples for how to strengthen professional identity based on everyday challenges faced by practitioners. The Power of Reflection in Teacher Education and Professional Development is therefore an essential guide for students, in-service teachers, and teacher educators alike, as well as for anyone in the helping professions. © 2022 Fred Korthagen and Ellen Nuijten.

Under the background of rapid and comprehensive development of society and technology, the accommodation industry has shown a relatively prosperous development trend, which has promoted the reform and development of the hotel industry. The scale, quantity, and mode of hotel enterprises have undergone great changes, and there has been a structural surplus. Among them, the most obvious change is the integration of digital technology, which integrates technology and hotel services to form a new hotel format. Combined with a series of policy encouragement trends promulgated by the state, the hotel management and digital operation majors in higher vocational education are more targeted for the cultivation of talents, which can cultivate talents with innovative ability and industry skills in the hotel industry. In this context, it is very important to carry out an adaptive analysis on the professional psychology of students majoring in hotel management and digital operations, which can tap their potential and promote the improvement of teaching quality. Aiming at this subject, this work proposes a neural network (PPANet) for analyzing the psychological adaptability of students in this major. Aiming at the problem that CNN cannot capture the periodicity and trend of data, this work proposes a multiscale deep residual network. The network adds convolution kernels with different scales to learn data features and enhances generalization ability and improves accuracy through residual short-circuit structure and deep structure. Furthermore, based on ReLU, this work proposes an improved IReLU activation function with better learning properties. The systematic experiment verifies the feasibility of applying PPANet to the analysis of professional psychological adaptability of students majoring in hotel management and digital operations. © 2022 Juan Li.

We propose an applied machine learning course that teaches students with no machine learning background how to train and use deep learning models for deploying aerial drones (multi-copters). Our unique, hands-on curriculum gives students insight into the algorithms that power autonomous systems as well as the hardware technology on which they execute. Students learn how to integrate Python code with serial communications for streaming sensors and imagery to deep learning models. Students use OpenCV, Keras, and TensorFlow to learn about computer vision and deep learning . The final project (see Figure 1) provides the opportunity for students to plan and develop an end-to-end, fully autonomous, self-contained product (i.e. all systems physically residing on the drone itself) that is integrated with heavy-payload drones and computer vision in a scenario centered around an outdoor search and rescue mission. With no human in the loop, students deploy drones in search of a missing person. The drone locates and identifies the individual, delivers a care package to their location, and then reports the individual’s geolocation to ground rescuers before returning home. The novel helper code and solutions are built in-house using Python and open technologies. Results from a pilot offering in the spring of 2021 indicate that our approach is effective and engaging for computer and cyber science students who have previously taken a basic artificial intelligence course and who have 1-2 years of programming experience. This paper details the design, focus, and methodology behind our Autonomous Systems Integration curriculum as well as the challenges we encountered during its debut. © © 2022 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda. Introduction. One of the most important tasks of the modern education system in Russia is the search for organizational forms that can meet the needs of the labor market, solve the problem of providing enterprises, especially high-tech ones, with personnel with deep fundamental knowledge and relevant practical skills. The answer to this request is the development of a dual education system that takes into account the modern realities of socio-economic development. The purpose of the work is to study the development of forms of organization of interaction between enterprises and educational organizations within the framework of dual education. Materials and methods. In order to study the significance and prospects for the development of the dual education system, a retrospective and comparative analysis, an ecosystem approach were used. The study involved 98 graduates of one of the basic departments of the Don State Technical University (Russian Federation), who studied from 2003 to 2020 and are currently working at a partner enterprise. For the purpose of comparative analysis and confirmation of the hypothesis about the impact of training at the basic department on the acceleration of professional adaptation, two groups of employees (35 people each) with work experience from three to ten years were also interviewed: those who studied at this department and those who did not study at it. The method of group expert assessments, questionnaires, the Mann-Whitney U-test are applied Results. A survey of employees of a large Russian industrial enterprise who studied at the basic department and did not study at it showed that the average period of professional adaptation of the first was about 4.9 months, which is more than twice less than the same period in the group of those who did not study at it. Similarly, the period of perception of the corporate culture of the enterprise: for those who studied at the basic department, it is more than two times shorter than for those who did not study at it. Both groups of respondents rated the importance of mentoring for young workers by 5 points on a 5-point scale. The Mann-Whitney U-criterion for assessing the period of professional adaptation is 108.5, for assessing the perception of corporate culture - 86.5 (at U0.01 =413; U0.05 =471). Conclusion. The results of the study allow us to conclude about the significance of the accumulated experience in the development of the domestic dual education system and its key institutional unit - the basic department at the partner enterprise. The prospects for the development of dual education are seen in the dissemination of the principle of lifelong learning . This principle presupposes the formation of a new model of dual education as part of a vocational education ecosystem that allows taking into account current and prospective personnel requirements of enterprises. © 2022 LLC Ecological Help.
