A systematic review of research on teaching web design to secondary school students through HTML and CSS

Introduction: Teaching web design using HTML and CSS is an increasingly important component of secondary education, preparing students for future careers in information technology. This systematic review examines research on methodologies and tools for teaching web design in secondary schools, identifying key effectiveness factors and approaches to overcome learning difficulties. Methods: Following PRISMA methodology, we conducted a systematic review of research published between 2007 and 2024. Initial searches in Scopus and Web of Science were expanded to include Google Scholar and additional databases following reviewer recommendations. Nine studies meeting inclusion criteria were selected from comprehensive searching. Inclusion criteria focused on empirical research involving HTML/CSS instruction in secondary or vocational schools with full-text availability. The limited number of studies despite expanded searching confirms the nascent state of empirical research in this domain. Results: Analysis revealed increasing research interest since 2017, with most studies conducted in Indonesia and the United States. Research predominantly focused on professional technical schools with 10th-grade students. Key findings are organized around three themes: (1) digital tools and platforms supporting web design education, including gamification platforms, learning management systems, and visual programming environments; (2) factors influencing learning effectiveness, including student characteristics, pedagogical approaches, and technical infrastructure; and (3) common learning difficulties and their solutions, particularly regarding complex material comprehension and student motivation. The recent emergence of gamification-based approaches shows particular promise for enhancing student engagement. Conclusions: Effective web design instruction requires a comprehensive approach integrating modern methodologies and tools while addressing student needs and providing adequate support. Project-based learning, gamification, and interactive environments emerged as particularly effective approaches. The scarcity of empirical research, confirmed through expanded searching, highlights the urgent need for additional studies. Future research should compare the effectiveness of different teaching methodologies and develop evidence-based recommendations for optimizing instruction across various educational contexts. © The Author(s) 2025.

Transitions in vocational education and training - challenges in the role of training agencies in Norway

Vocational education and training involve several actors working together in a skills ecosystem. This paper focuses on the role of training agencies (TAs) in the transitions in this system. They interrelate with schools, workplaces, and the apprentices themselves to enhance the quality of the apprenticeship training. Using rich data from one Norwegian county, we present evidence on the transition from school to apprenticeship. Further, we analyse whether TAs contribute to apprenticeship completion as well as the variation across TAs using regression analysis, controlling for socio-economic differences across apprentices, and we distinguish between the perspectives of the workplace and the apprentice. We find that the probability of passing the final examination and achieving the trade certificate is significantly higher for apprentices in TAs than for apprentices with a contract directly with an independent private firm. In addition, there is a large variation in completion rates across TAs and across approved training establishments that are not a part of a TA. © The Author(s) 2026.

Improving Critical Thinking Skills through a Flipped Project-Based Learning Model Integrated with Mockup Media and Augmented Reality

The rapid advancement of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 demands that vocational high school graduates possess not only technical expertise but also higher-order thinking skills, particularly critical thinking. However, many learning practices in vocational education remain limited to procedural instruction with minimal emphasis on cognitive development. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Flipped Project-Based Learning (FPjBL) model integrated with mockup and Augmented Reality (AR) media in enhancing vocational students’ critical thinking skills compared to conventional learning approaches. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, namely pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample was grade X and XI students from six state vocational high schools in the Solo Raya area, consisting of 216 students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group used the FPjBL model with mockup and AR media, while the control group used conventional learning. Data were collected through critical thinking ability tests and learning motivation questionnaires. Data analysis used ANCOVA and multiple linear regression. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase in critical thinking skills compared to the control group (F (1,213) = 104.192, p <.001, partial η2 = .329). The analysis and explanation indicators showed the greatest increase. Linear regression shows that learning motivation, media perception, and student activity significantly affect critical thinking skills (R2=.613). These results confirm that integrating Integration Media Mockup and Augmented Reality with FPjBL effectively strengthens students’ critical thinking and can be adopted in vocational education curricula to better prepare learners for the complex challenges of Industry 4.0. © The Authors.

Thematic mapping of competence-based education and training research through direct citation network analysis and topic modelling with latent semantic analysis

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to provide researchers, policymakers and practitioners with a state-of-the-art snapshot of the competence-based education and training (CBET) research domain by identifying its main research streams, as well as its dominant and under-explored research areas. Design/methodology/approach – We employed direct citation network analysis to examine the intellectual structure of CBET research and identify its main research streams across 1, 090 journal articles. To further explore the themes within these streams, we applied topic modelling with latent semantic analysis. Findings – CBET is a fragmented research domain, based on the citation relationships among articles and the diversity of journals in which they have been published. Its core consisted of 231 articles, from which three main research streams emerged: the Higher education Stream, the Vocational and Professional education Stream, and the General education Stream. We present six dominant topics covered by the research streams and highlight the need for future studies that transcend educational levels. Graduate Satisfaction: How Experiential Learning Supercharges Employability Skills

The low absorption of university graduates into the labor market is a crucial issue that must be addressed, with many graduates experiencing a mismatch between their expertise and the job roles they choose. The aim of this study is to investigate the mediating role of employability skills in examining the effect of experiential learning on graduate learning satisfaction. This study uses a quantitative approach. Data were collected from 297 graduates of the Office Administration education Study Program in Central Java via an online questionnaire using a 1–5 Likert scale. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the warpPLS software, including validity testing, collinearity, and the relationships between variables through path coefficients. The research results support all hypotheses, showing a significant positive relationship between employability skills and graduate learning satisfaction, experiential learning and employability skills, experiential learning and graduate learning satisfaction through employability skills. The findings conclude that employability skills successfully mediate the impact of experiential learning on graduate learning satisfaction. It is recommended that educational institutions strengthen the implementation of experiential learning opportunities, such as internships and work integrated learning, to better meet the expectations of local industries and improve students’ employability skills. © (2025), (UiTM Press). Voice of socio-cultural values in the dynamics of career choices for vocational higher education students

Purpose: This study aims to look at the motives and dynamics of career choices in the socio-cultural values of the Bugis community. Career choice factors are rarely approached from the aspect of socio-cultural values. One indicator of extrinsic factors is socio-cultural values. Design/methodology/approach: This study is qualitative research. The subjects of this study consisted of 34 first-semester students at vocational higher education. The research method is in the form of qualitative research through documentation, observations and interviews. Documentation was carried out to collect data on the informant’s academic achievement and background. Observations were made to observe the informants’ behavior and learning habits while in class. Interviews were used to determine motives, influencing factors and the impact of informants’ career choices. Findings: The findings of this study indicate: (1) vocational higher education students in the Bugis community choose careers based on their own choices and other people’s choices or other people’s considerations (chosen); (2) the socio-cultural values of the Bugis community become an influential factor in the career choices of vocational higher education students in the Bugis community, both those who choose themselves and those who are elected and (3) for those who choose themselves, the socio-cultural values of the Bugis community become a factor that directly influences vocational higher education students. Originality/value: The socio-cultural values of the Bugis people are a factor that has an indirect influence on the career choice of vocational higher education students. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Exploring the Impact of Mobile Learning Platform Validity on Graphic Design Learning

This study investigates the impact and validity of integrating a mobile learning platform into graphic design education, addressing the critical need for innovative pedagogical tools in this field. Drawing from a comprehensive review of literature on mobile learning and its potential to enhance educational outcomes, the research focuses on assessing the authenticity and reliability of such platforms as effective learning media. Using the 4-D development model (define, design, develop, disseminate), the study employed a systematic approach to validate the platform through expert evaluations. Media experts assessed interface design, usability, and utility, while material experts evaluated content quality, instructional design, and evaluation methods. The findings confirm the platform's validity, demonstrating its alignment with educational standards and its potential to improve student engagement, skill development, and learning outcomes in graphic design courses. Scientific work independence to support the implementation of science integrated learning at various education levels

With the research reported here, we specifically aim to develop application products of scientific work independence instruments through science integrated learning (SIL) for various education levels (elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, and universities). The SIL model was applied in learning to determine specific indicators for scientific work independence following learners’ development through the application of the research and development methodology. Product testing was conducted in elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, and universities. Based on the research results, SIL V1.0 App, an acronym for science integrated learning application, was developed based on mobile apps in the form of Android applications that may be installed on devices with Android operating systems (OS). The scientific work independence instrument was developed based on Piaget’s theory, which states that the level of independence at each stage of scientific work is based on the development of children’s learning psychology. The scientific work independence application has precise boundaries because it is adjusted to children’s psychological development. Empowering Project-Based Learning Model With Video Blog

The Project-Based Learning Model with video blog (vlog) integration, referred to as PjBLV, was developed as an enhancement of the traditional Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach. This innovation aims to address the limitations of PjBL in improving the effectiveness of hands-on learning experiences. A mixed-methods research design was employed, utilizing the Mile and Huberman method and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to validate the model. The development of the PjBLV model involved several stages, including conceptualization, theoretical framework, hypothesis formation, and final model development. Furthermore, a panel of seven learning model experts participated in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to assess the validity of the PjBLV model. The model is grounded in various theoretical frameworks such as those of Flemming, Lucas, Cruz, and Crespí. The PjBLV model consists of six phases: (1) posing an essential question, (2) designing a project plan, (3) learning through video blogs, (4) tracking student progress and project development, (5) assessing outcomes, and (6) evaluating the learning experience. Pedagogical practices promoting the development of wisdom in university students

Dealing with complex problems requires of future professionals more than knowledge, skills and expertise; it requires wisdom. Recently, the question how to develop wisdom in university students has been raised. Most theoretical models of wisdom include cognitive, affective-social, ethical-existential and action dimensions. The aim of this study was to examine (1) whether the four-dimensional theoretical structure of the wisdom concept can be empirically verified in the higher education context, and (2) what kinds of pedagogical practices explain the development of attributes related to wisdom in university students. Participants of the study were third-year university students (n = 535) representing several disciplines. Data were collected through a survey in which students evaluated their development in wisdom attributes with 46 items and answered 57 items concerning pedagogical practices used on their courses. Exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis were used to analyse the data. The analyses concerning the four-dimensional model of wisdom yielded four factors: cognitive, ethical–existential, affective, and social dimensions, thus partly verifying the theoretical structure. Regarding the pedagogical practices, activities aimed at developing scientific thinking, and sharing and learning from practical experiences explained most the development of attributes of wisdom. Collaboration between students, independent studying, and integration of theory and practice also played an important role. In general, diverse forms of teaching and learning seem to be crucial for the development of prerequisites of wisdom in higher education.
