This chapter examines the possibility of healing the divisions by means of a arguments such as those by Chalmers and Strawson which seek to address the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness by suggesting that all material phenomena incorporate a mental or experiential component. A perennial problem in vocational education and training concerns the vocational/academic divide and the subordinate, second-class status of vocational pursuits. However, the problems set out by Searle here have been described by Chalmers as merely the ‘easy’ problems of consciousness, that is, how to map brain functions onto human thinking and behaviour. As indicated earlier, various forms of working with the hands are at the core of the theory and practice of craftwork. Reconciliation strategies designed to bridge the divide are legion and their principal prescriptions follow from which particular form of diagnosis of the problem is favoured. © 2019 selection and editorial matter, Tom Feldges.
