Since the 1990s, many multinational companies have invested in Mexico. To satisfy their need for qualified labour, German companies often implement German-style dual apprenticeship training which combines vocational school and in-service training. This idea has also spread to the political level. Dual apprenticeship training is attractive for Mexico to improve the pool of skilled workers and to combat youth unemployment. This article illustrates that, while dual training contributes to improving the local skills base, the broader social effects are limited. © 2019 Westermann Schulbuchverlag GmbH. All rights reserved.
