Closing the academia-industry gap in undergraduate CS

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that the transition of recent CS graduates into their first jobs in industry is often not as smooth as one might expect. The difficulties they face are the result of a significant gap between industry expectations and their academic experiences. The presence of the academia-industry gap has been demonstrated repeatedly over the past two decades, but the question remains why it still persists today and what strategies we as CS educators may employ to effectively close it for good. With my thesis I want to take the first steps towards structurally closing this gap. © 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
