E'Lyte. Design, implementation and evaluation of a structured teaching curriculum in postgraduate anaesthesiology training; E'Lyte Entwicklung und Validierung eines strukturierten Lehr- und Weiterbildungscurriculums der Anästhesiologie am Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)

Abstract

The requirements of various German medical associations for the qualification of medical specialists are mainly defined by a fixed minimum duration of training and the completion of a predetermined number of medical procedures. This does not necessarily guarantee that trainees will reach the level of expertise that is expected from medical specialists. Furthermore, postgraduate training is inhomogeneous, depending on the residents‘assignments to different workplaces and their supervisors. The aim of this project was to develop a structured postgraduate teaching curriculum for junior anaesthesiology residents, before their ICU rotation (first and second year of residency), to homogenise their anaesthesiology training and to prepare them for complex workplaces. The six-step approach of medical curriculum development was used to design this teaching curriculum. Different empirical-qualitative research techniques, like focus groups, were included. To maximise learning effects, well accepted teaching strategies were integrated, for example, the modified Jigsaw method or the ICAP frame model. Hence E'Lyte was developed and validated: a new postgraduate teaching curriculum for junior anaesthesiology residents, which resulted in 12 sections (each section consisting of 2–6 lessons), thus exceeding classical training and education methods.
