'How i have grown over these years seems to be extreme to me'. Socialisation of the next generation in an innovative learning culture

Opening and Extending Vocational Education
Journal · pp. 135-158
Abstract

In the context of digitalisation changing requirements regarding employee's skills and knowledge foundation require structural changes in workplace training, as well as a new learning culture to accompany these changes and shape VET to be a suitable preparatory pathway for gainful employment in the future. In the example of a case study within the Swiss telecommunication industry, we show how a new learning culture supports structural innovations, such as the introduction of an online marketplace where apprentices find their projects, coaching as a new approach of advising apprentices in the workplace and tools that support creative work. Attitudes, values and beliefs regarding how apprentices learn and what they need to bring at the start of an apprenticeship have shifted. High motivation to take on challenges, such as working at different locations across the country in changing teams, finding projects instead of working in a predefined pathway (including initiating and working in ones' own projects) and communicating and networking with numerous people is key to success in this type of flexible and individualized apprenticeship. © Peter Lang AG, International Academic Publishers, Bern 2021.
