Enhancements of Vocational Students’ Engagement of Workplace Learning in the Industry-University Collaboration Learning Environment: A Case Study in the Greater Bay Area

Abstract

A close collaboration between vocational institutions and industrial workplaces becomes imperative to ensure students’ opportunities to collaborate with other people and get familiar with the workplace environments. This case study of a higher vocational institution in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) investigated vocational students’ engagement in work-based learning from an industry-university collaboration perspective in enhancing students’ professional skills in dynamic situational work contexts. Ten internship reports and four in-depth interviews on vocational graduates were analysed to reveal students’ participation in work-based learning in an industry-university collaboration. The findings suggested that applying the collaborative model to the vocational institutions can reveal students’ learning in tandem with work-based teaching pedagogies. First, industrial enterprises’ involvement ensures students’ early acquisition of occupational skills to adapt to new industry fields. Second, vocational education with strong industry orientation can adopt new teaching and learning methods to orient students to real-work environments. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
