Abstract

Dual vocational education means that apprentices in vocational schools and students in applied universities receive comprehensive parts of their competencies not only in these educational bodies but also within companies. Such practically applied training takes place in a curricular coordinated and organised manner. Dual training practices are widespread in Austria, Germany and Switzerland; in other countries, school education and employment generally take place one after the other. This article examines how subsidiaries of foreign companies, which are not familiar with dual vocational education and training in their country of origin, adopt it in Germany over time. The contribution takes an evolutionary view. A literature review explains how subsidiaries can evolve over time. As the issue has been neglected in research, the study uses a qualitative methodological approach to explore the field. The result section shows that the subsidiary as well as the socio-economic setting are relevant for dual activities. The discussion integrates the findings in literature and draws conclusions for evolutionary research and for practitioners. © 2023 Zentralausschus fur Deutsche Landeskunde. All rights reserved.
