Correlation between Academic and On-the-Job Training Courses Performance of Information Technology Students

Abstract

This descriptive study determined the relationship between the selected core and professional courses (subsequently referred to as academic courses) and the on-the-job training (OJT) course performance of Information Technology (IT) students in one university in Manila. Data gathered from 133 fourth-year students showed that students performed well both in their academic and OJT courses. It was disclosed that 7 of the 9 academic courses had a positive, albeit weak, significant correlation with OJT course performance. The findings further suggest that the correlation coefficient increases from the first year up to the summer of the second year of the curriculum, indicating that the academic courses become more relevant as they get closer to the OJT course. No significant difference was found in the academic course performance when categorized by sex. However, the performance of students in their OJT course was significantly different across sex. Implications and recommendations to improve the academic and OJT course contents and the IT curriculum are offered. © 2024 IEEE.
