COVID-19 has become a catalyst for educational institutions and their research collaborating organizations to seek innovative solutions in a very short period of time. While e-learning and remote learning have been utilized before, it was only as part of the basic education. The circumstances of COVID-19 have necessitated a full transition of education from the classroom to a virtual environment. This new teaching method of rapidly shifting from face-to-face courses to online instruction was termed Emergency Remote Learning. It particularly posed challenges for technical education syllabi incorporating laboratory works and practical experience at research institutions and enterprises. This paper outlines our educational approach for the crisis-modified syllabus "Lasers and their Applications in Optical-Electronic Devices"and delves into the useful knowledge gained while implementing Emergency Remote Learning, emphasizing the primary challenges and advances identified by us and our colleagues. © 2024 ACM.
