Higher education apprenticeship pedagogies: A multilateral approach

Approaches to Work-Based Learning in Higher Education: Improving Graduate Employability
Journal · pp. 24-44
Abstract

Within higher education ecosystems, academic learners vary in background, experience, and intellectual approach. Through appropriate teaching, structured curriculum, and scaffolded study, students are taught to cultivate their understanding and application of theory within a scholarly environment. Apprentices, however, are expected to attain equivalent academic outcomes while simultaneously meeting employer expectations and sustaining their employment. As a result, the way academics deliver their courses must be adapted to support these unique learners. The approach of this chapter is threefold. It will first identify the variations in pedagogical approaches that are most effective for apprentice learners. Secondly, it will unify emerging theory-driven teaching practices, which emphasise cognitive support with more traditional teaching methods. Finally, it will outline approaches that institutions can adopt to enhance the learner experience whilst supporting their academic development. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Matthew Barr.
