Environmental skills as a key enabler for local industry sustainability: Preparing tomorrow's workforce

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to explore the role of environmental skills in enhancing sustainability practices in local industries, with a focus on how these skills act as key drivers of sustainability concepts. This study also investigated the preparation of the future workforce to meet the growing demands of sustainable industrial practices. The research method adopted a mixed-method approach, combining a systematic literature review with quantitative data from local industries. The literature review examined the framework of environmental skills, while the quantitative data provided additional insights into competency needs in local industries. The findings indicate that environmental skills are increasingly critical for local industries to remain competitive and compliant with sustainability standards. Preliminary studies reveal that while many local industries recognize the need for sustainability, there remains a significant gap in integrating environmental skills into training programs. This study provides new insights into environmental skills as essential components for local industries. It offers practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to incorporate environmental skills into training and professional development programs, ensuring that the future workforce is equipped to address sustainability challenges. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
