There is currently much concern that young people are not only facing declining opportunities in the labour market, but also have limited access to full-time voca tional training (which might be seen as a more useful social option to unemployment). This paper represents an examination of the vocational training options open to young people and the role of government programmes in widening these options. It is argued that current employment and training government pro grammes could be more effective if they were better integrated and co-ordinated. In particular, there is scope to improve the links within the institutional (TAFE) pro grammes (e.g., EPUY to pre-employment courses) and also the links from institu tional to employment based vocational training programmes (e.g., pre-employment to SYETP). © 1983, Sage Publications.
