Educational and occupational development and initial vocational training: Occupational choice and early terminations of apprenticeship contracts The early termination of an apprenticeship contract is a critical event in the educational career, which calls for an adaptation ofoccupational choicesand a career reorientation. Based on an adaptation of the career choice model proposed by Herzog, Neuenschwander and Wannack (2006), and relying on longitudinal data from 1 159 apprentices from the canton of Berne/Switzerland, the apprenticeship contract of which has been terminated early. The authors analyse the different steps of the new occupational choice as well as factors which promote or hinder the reintegration of young people in vocational education and training. Implications for career preparation and career guidance are discussed.
