Abstract

In the context of the emergence of modern vocational education in Germany, this article analyses the relations between history of education and gender in the perspective of segregation. First it outlines the debates concerning women's access to vocational education and labour after 1865. The second part of the article focuses on the creation and institutionalization of the first business schools for women during the last third of the 19th century. These schools were generally created by women societies and particularly by labour promoting societies. Next to mere scholarly education for bourgeois women, this article also mentions the traditional business education, i.e. the apprenticeship. It tries to evaluate opportunities and conditions for the development of female vocational education in an environment dominated by males. The article shows that in the field of vocational education, segregation is not only based on sexual criteria but also on class reasoning. © 2010-2014 Cairn.info.
