This chapter focuses on the impact of education on women’s status and employment in today’s global labor market. Educational credentials are necessary but not always sufficient to assure fair rewards and recognition in girls’ and women’s jobs and careers. While educational skills prepare young women for work, they rarely provide them with all the tools needed to combat the gender inequities that pervade the job market. The degree to which education is gender fair determines how well women can support themselves and their families. In this chapter, we analyze the relationship between education and lifetime economic outcomes. Without intergenerational understanding of discrimination beyond the schools, little change or constructive remedies can occur. We must continue to seek equity so that boys and girls are treated fairly in schools and are equally prepared for a wide range of careers. © 2007 by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.
