Abstract

Training professionals are required to broaden their idea of where learning can occur. This study characterizes the workplace as a learning environment that cannot be separated from where individuals perform and considers learning the effect of interactive processes that take place in workplace learning environments (WLEs). Building on the Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire, we developed a WLE measure. To do this, we conducted a literature review to identify potential additions to the dimensionality of WLE, created the items for the new dimensions of WLEs, and applied a confirmatory refinement and validation approach using a data set gathered from a convenience sampling group of 323 employees who worked at a company in Korea. Results from the analysis confirm that the WLE is a reliable measure and that the interpretations of WLE scores are valid. This study provides a meaningful framework for extending the multidimensionality of the learning organization and a diagnostic tool for instructional designers, researchers, and practitioners who are interested in designing organizationally sensitive learning environments. © 2014 International Society for Performance Improvement.
