Two aspects in which school prepares students for their transition to work-life are addressed. First, schools are supposed to foster their students' occupational exploration and help them in deciding and planning concerning their future vocational training (or other educational careers after graduation). Second, cognitive apprenticeship is pointed out as a way of school learning in academic domains that promises to result in knowledge relevant to everyday situations and students' future work-life, in particular. As a basis for discussing vocational orientation and apprenticeship learning at school, the apprenticeship system of vocational training is introduced in more detail. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
