This paper aims both to study the reasons why apprenticeship masters recruit apprentices and to identify the diversity of tutorship practices implemented in selection and training. The empirical study of 285 apprenticeship masters shows that if a recruitment goal is to develop a skilled workforce, it also responds to patterns of transmission of the craft to younger generations. These results confirm that companies have various forms of tutorship practices in reception conditions and different modes of socialization. © 2015, Institut National d’Etude du Travail et d’Orientation Professionnelle.
