An integral part of an education and training for civil engineers (but not only theirs) is their practical training in the field of the sustainable land use. One of the components of the sustainable development and land use is the issues of previously used areas – the brownfields. In the years 2011- 2014 the Faculty of Civil Engineering, VSB - TU Ostrava was a coordinator of a project, which ensured short-term internships for students from different faculties of various universities in the Czech Republic. The students participated in the internships of various branches and specialization, the only common feature was their focus on the regeneration of the brownfield areas. The paper shows an evaluation of the realized internships as part of the Vocational Education and Training with the benefit of hindsight as well as in the longer time line, both from the part of the internship coordinators and from the part of selected students who mostly finished school and started work. The part of this paper is also the point of view of some organizations that provided the internship - their satisfaction or recommendations for improvement. The conclusion of the paper then forms a brief assessment of this interesting complement to standard educational subjects related to the sustainable development. © SGEM2016.
