Experiential learning in engineering technology: A case study on problem solving in project-based learning at the undergraduate level

Abstract

Experiential learning is a theory that suggests a strong emotional connection between doing and thinking that cements knowledge in a more robust manner than traditional learning methods. In accordance with this theory, engineering technology (ET) programs integrate laboratory content with most courses. Many ET programs also extend experiential learning with internship and co-op partnerships with industry. An expanding application of the method puts the university-industry partnership directly into coursework, leading to a much higher level of student engagement. This article discusses experiential learning techniques as the focus of two ET courses: Summer Industrial Projects Program (SiPP) and our capstone senior design class. Showcased in the case study is an engineering solution from these courses that resolved the primary quality defect of a small, multi-generational manufacturer.
