In a context that strongly values higher education, this article considers the motives that lead young adults (18 to 35) to apply for vocational training programs in high school. By applying an interdisciplinary frame of analysis (psychological and sociological) for decisional action, a thematic analysis is used on the content of 90 semi-directed interviews conducted with students from five different Vocational Training Centers in Quebec and in Ontario. Results reveal eight decisional dimensions that operate at the intersection of two complementary tensions: “life-course/professional project” and “context forces/strategies of adjustment”. © Tous droits réservés.
